Ken Kunen: Algebraist
Ken Kunen is justifiably best known for his work in set theory and topology. What I would guess many of his friends and students in those areas do not know is that Ken also did important work in algebra, especially in quasigroup and loop theory. In fact, I think it is not an exaggeration to say that his work in loop theory, both alone and in collaboration, revolutionized the field. In this pape...
متن کاملKunen and set theory
Kenneth Kunen (1943–) figured principally in the development of set theory in all the major directions, this during a formative period for the subject when it was transmuting to a sophisticated field of mathematics. In fact, several of Kunen’s results and proofs still frame modern set theory or serve as standards to be reckoned with in its further progress. This is all the more notable as much ...

متن کاملOn !-independence and the Kunen-shelah Property
We prove that spaces with an uncountable ω-independent family fail the Kunen-Shelah property. Actually, if {xi}i∈I is an uncountable ω-independent family, there exists an uncountable subset J ⊂ I such that xj / ∈ conv ({xi}i∈J\{j}) for every j ∈ J . This improves a previous result due to Sersouri, namely that every uncountable ω-independent family contains a convex right-separated subfamily.
متن کاملBiography of Enrico Coen
M ost snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus) live in scientific obscurity, taking a humble place in springtime gardens or bouquets. However, in the 1980s, molecular geneticist Enrico Coen helped to place these lowly plants in the spotlight. His work at the John Innes Center (JIC) in Norwich, U.K., used snapdragons as a model organism for studying plant development. Coen has identified and cloned sever...
